East End of London in 1880

The East End of London in 1880 was marked by significant social and economic challenges. The area was notorious for its overcrowding, unsanitary living conditions, and deep poverty. The East End was a vast, dirty, overcrowded slum, struggling to cope with the sheer number of people choosing to live there. Disease, hunger, neglect, and even violence claimed the lives of one in four children before they reached the age of five. The East End’s history of intense political activism and association with some of the country’s most influential social reformers is a testament to the area’s struggles during this period.

Could this be the face of what William Francis looked like. Dad’s father.

If violence claimed the lives of one in four children before reaching the age of five, I can count myself as one of the lucky ones. Dad’s older brother died in a motor accident. I believe him to be about 14 years.
